Windmill Palms
Common Names- Windmill, Chusan, Chinese Windmill
Windmill palms are known for there spiraling fan palms and hairy trunks. They are slow growing trees reaching heights up too 25'. They are good in full sun, light shade, or moderate shade. They are drought tolerant so avoid areas that will hold water and the more sunlight you can provide the better your windmill will do. Windmills do great in all types of soil and most climates. When first planted your windmill will need special attention until it is fully rooted, usually 3-6 months of spring or summer weather, by watering the tree daily, not the ground. paying special attention to not let the ground get saturated. You will also want to avoid any weed killers or fertilizers not specifically designed for palms within 15' of your windmill. Palms are a member of the grass family therefore anything that will kill a weed or grass will dramatically harm your palm possibly resulting in its death. Windmills have a moderate salt tolerance so we recommend adding one table spoon of Epsom salt per gallon of water, one gallon of water for each foot of height on the tree, every other month. Avoid adding salt to often for too much salt will hinder the growth of the tree.
