Washingtonian Palm

Common Names- Washington Palm, Mexican Fan Palm

Washingtonian palms are very gorgeous palms with a very fast growth rate. Whese palms can reach heights of 70'-100' however in South Carolina they typically reach heights of 15'-20'. Washingtonians are none for there large dark green fans and growing several heads per year. Washingtonians are subject to winter burn, leaves turn brown every freeze, however they grow new fans every spring very rapidly so they come fully back out year after year very quickly. They are drought tolerant trees so you want to avoid areas that will hold water however they are widely acceptable to all kinds of soil so will do great in most areas. Though they are drought tolerant trees they will need daily water until they are fully rooted, usually 3-6 months of spring or summer weather, being cautious of standing water in the ground. There growth directly correlates with the amount of water in the spring so give a little extra water in spring and enjoy its beauty the rest of the year. Avoid any weed killer or fertilizers not specifically designed for palms within 25' of these trees. Palms come from the grass family and anything that will hurt weeds or grass will dramatically harm your palm possibly resulting in its death. Washingtonians are moderately salt tolerant, we recommend adding 1 table spoon per gallon of water and adding 1 gallon for every foot of the tree twice a year, early spring and late summer. This will aid its growing season Refrain from adding too much salt for it will hinder the growth and appearance.
