Sago Palm
Common Name- Sago
Sago palms are very common to the South Carolina landscape. These low growing trees give a brilliant large dark green head and commonly stay low to the ground accenting larger palms greatly. The average height is around 5'-6'. Sagos take a harsh winter in this climate commonly browning out throughout the winter whenever there is a freeze. However if you cut back the brown early spring and provide plenty of water you can almost watch them grow back year after year. Sagos do good in full sun, light and moderate shade, the more sun you give a sago the larger it will grow, and grow great in all kinds of soil. You do want to avoid areas that hold water as well as any weed killer or fertilizer not specifically designed for palms within 5' of these trees. Sagos are salt tolerant trees so adding Epsom salt will greatly improve the growth and look of the tree. We recommend 2 table spoons of salt per gallon of water, and 2 gallons of the mixture poured directly on the trunk of the tree every other month. Refrain from adding salt too often as it can hinder the growth if overdone.
