Pindo Palms
Common Names- Pindo, Jelly Palm
Pindo palms are known for there long, 4'-6', blue green leaves and large head giving a lot of foliage. They are very slow growers however can reach typical heights of 15' over a long period of time. They are also known for there fruit, they grow grape sized berry's that are edible when they turn orange. They are drought tolerant trees so you want to avoid areas that hold water, however there growth correlates with the amount of water given so as long as the ground is not saturated with water keep adding it. Pindos will need special attention until they are fully rooted, usually 3-6 months of spring or summer weather, by watering the tree, not the ground, daily but pay close attention that the ground is not holding water. You want to avoid any weed killers or fertilizers not specifically designed for palms within 25'. Palms are part of the grass family therefore anything that will kill a weed or grass will have dramatic affects on your palm possibly resulting in its death. Pindos are highly salt tolerant. You will notice much better growth and color if you add 2 table spoons of Epsom salt for every gallon of water, 1 gallon of water for every foot of height on the tree, every other month. Avoid adding salt too often as it can hinder the growth of your tree if done in excess.
