Sabal Palmetto Tree

Common Names- Palm Tree, Palmetto Palm, Cabbage Palm, Sabal Palm

Sabal Palmettos are the South Carolina state tree, a must have in your South Carolina landscape. This is the most common style of palm tree and adapts to several different climates. It is a slow growing tree that can reach heights of 40' but more commonly found in South Carolina between 10'-20'. They prefer full sun but still do well in light shade. They are drought tolerant and easily transplanted however special care is required until the tree is fully rooted. You want to avoid areas that hold water but sabals do great in almost any type of soil. When first planted you will want to water the tree, not the ground, daily until the tree is fully rooted, about 3-6 months of spring or summer weather. A good sign that the tree is rooted is growth from the top. You will want to avoid any kind of weed killer or fertilizer not specifically designed for palms within 25' of the tree. Palms are a member of the grass family so anything that will kill a weed or grass will dramatically affect your palm possibly resulting in its death. You will also want to avoid nailing or cutting into the trunk of the tree, this opens up the tree for infection and will hinder its growth. Sabals are salt tolerant therefore adding Epsom salt every other month to the soil will greatly help these trees. We recommend mixing 2 table spoons of salt per gallon of water and 1 gallon for every foot of height on the tree not to exceed 10 gallons. Even though sabals are salt tolerant too much salt will hinder its growth so refrain from adding salt more often than every other month.
